About UrthBox
UrthBox is a healthy food subscription service aimed at clean eaters that delivers nutritious, non-GMO snacks, drinks and other treats on a monthly basis. UrthBox has caught the attention of media giants like TechCrunch and Forbes, and naturally you’re wondering if it’s worth signing up for the service.
This UrthBox review provides an in-depth look at the brand, subscription, customer reviews and more so you can decide for yourself whether or not UrthBox is worth the money.
Overview of UrthBox
The San Francisco-based brand UrthBox emerged from the clean eating movement. The creators of UrthBox are aware of the fact that our health largely depends on what we eat. Obesity in children and adults in particular is influenced by the type of food we eat, especially snacking.
In the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, it can be time-consuming to prioritize a healthy diet. Between career, social life, family and fitness, it’s easy to forget that you should be mindful of the food you put into your body. The UrthBox subscription gives you convenient and health-conscious food options for your home, office or on-the-go.
UrthBox specifically offers snacks that are organic, all natural and non-GMO. If you’ve ever browsed the section at the grocery store where these foods can be found, you’ll know that these options tend to be very expensive. I always plan to buy healthy snacks, see the price tags, and then reach for boring fruits and vegetables. It’s a pretty pointless cycle.
UrthBox delivers these treats to your home or office every month. You have the option to continue ordering for 3, 6 or 12 months. Whether you’re eating during a movie, stressing out while studying for exams or during the workday, there’s no need to feel ashamed about eating these products. It’s perfectly okay to snack regularly during the day. It’s not okay to eat a whole box of cookies just like that.
We’ll get into the subscription options and their costs, but first, a summary of this UrthBox review:
Pros
- Monthly delivery of organic, natural, non-GMO snacks and beverages
- Four subscription options and sizes, including a choice for vegan, gluten-free eaters
- You can choose between monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual subscriptions
- Cancel at any time
- Multiple discounts and savings for all customers
- Free shipping within the US
Cons
- Potentially low value if you’re a big snacker
- No customization of the box
How UrthBox Works
The UrthBoxes are well thought out. Each subscription contains full-size products that have to meet standards for ingredients, origin, calories, nutrition and manufacturing. The full-size products part excites me – it’s annoying when you buy little snack packs that contain three cookies or potato chips each.
When you sign up for UrthBox, you go through the following steps:
Choose the size of your box: mini, small, medium, large
Choose the duration of your subscription: monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually
Choose your subscription type: classic, gluten-free, vegan or diet box.
Discover healthy products: Try up to 30 full-size products each month with a retail value of up to $100.
Earn points: Buy additional products at member discounts, earn loyalty points for every purchase and redeem them in the UrthBox store.
You’re not taking much of a risk when you sign up for UrthBox, as you can cancel for free at any time. It is also important to note that the subscription is automatically renewed on the first of the month unless you specify otherwise.
What Comes in an UrthBox?
Now we come to the good stuff. The UrthBox contains naturally healthy foods such as muesli, nuts and seeds, trail mix, superfoods and dried fruit and vegetables. Finally, you can be one of those people who come to the office with snacks like they’re going for a hike, with no effort at all.
They also wonderfully offer typical junk food favorites such as cookies, snack bars, chips, candy and chocolate in a nutritious form. Wholesome and guilt-free. I’ll just leave this picture of heavenly, delicious sea salt chocolate caramel squares here.
The drinks in the UrthBox look pretty tasty too. Juices and cleansing products, shakes and smoothies are also included in the subscription. These tend to be even more expensive than organic snacks – who doesn’t buy something from a smoothie store every now and then and immediately regret spending money on something you could have made at home?
UrthBox Subscription Pricing
So far everything in this UrthBox review looks promising, and now we come to the cost of the individual subscriptions. The Classic, Gluten Free, Vegan and Diet boxes are available in four sizes:
- Mini: 7+ snacks for $14.99/month
- Small: 14+ snacks for $24.99/month (save 20%)
- Medium: 20+ snacks for $34.99/month (30% savings)
- Large: 27+ snacks for $44.99/month (40% savings)
Keep in mind that these are full size snacks, so most of the time you won’t eat them in one sitting. Honestly, for me, it would depend on how many chocolates or popped rice potato chips are in a bag. They are meant to supplement meals. So if you’re a regular grocery shopper, a mini or small Urthbox is suitable for one person. But I don’t want to tell you how to live your life.
UrthBox Reviews: What Do Customers Think?
Customers can’t leave reviews for UrthBox on the website, but the company does offer quotes from reputable media outlets. Most of them only describe the subscription, although Refinery29 praises it: “Smart snacks can be a great way to avoid overindulging at main meals…. Enter UrthBox, the snack company of our dreams.” That’s not particularly helpful, so I searched the internet for feedback from real customers.
Urbanvegan.net loved the subscription box and appreciated the experience of the surprise treats, most of which the reviewer enjoyed. The downside was that she received a whey-based protein shake in her vegan box that wasn’t vegan and was months past its expiration date. Urthbox customer service responded to her email, apologized for the mistake and offered her a free box for the next month. Although she liked the overall experience, the reviewer felt that some of the full-size products were quite small.
UrthBox has a 4.2/5 star rating on Trust Pilot out of 715 reviews, which is impressive. Satisfied customers praised the box for its variety and tasty snacks, while dissatisfied customers cited late delivery and inaccessible customer service, especially when it came to canceling their subscription. UrthBox has at least responded to each of the complaints.
The subscription has a 3/5 star rating on My Subscription Addiction, and the UrthBox reviews on Sitejabber are much worse, with an average rating of 1.1/5. Users reported similar complaints about customer service and damaged products. There were issues with UrthBox Groupons and cases where customers were charged even though they didn’t want to continue the subscription.
Overall, unfavorable reviews make up only a small portion of the total UrthBox reviews (about 15-20%).
Our Verdict on UrthBox
In this UrthBox review, it is clear that the company has good intentions. UrthBox cares about the health of its customers and addresses their complaints. Although some of the reviews were undoubtedly troubling, there were many more positive reviews than negative ones. No brand is perfect and it’s normal for there to be glitches here and there.
One thing that always stands out is the size of the products. Some full-size products look like they would last days or weeks, while others can easily be eaten in a single sitting. If you are a big snacker, you could use up the products before the month is up. However, as I mentioned earlier, these treats are meant to complement meals – they’re not for binge eating because you forgot to pack your lunch.
With all that in mind, we give UrthBox a thumbs up, especially since you can cancel your subscription at any time. Just make sure you contact the company at least a week in advance so there’s no hassle with canceling (which could tie you up for another month).
